County executives weigh in on gun control

Long Island’s two county executives are weighing in on the national gun control debate after Friday’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which left 20 children and six adults dead.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, a Democrat, said “it is long past time for our nation to have a serious conversation on how we stop the epidemic of gun violence. The time has come for everyone to put ideology aside and focus on common-sense measures we can take to make our schools and communities safer.”
But, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, a Republican, stopped short of calling for stricter gun laws and stressed better public preparedness.
“Nassau County adheres to New York State law, which has among the strictest gun registration laws in the nation,” Mangano said. “In addition, Nassau County will host its fourth Active Shooter education seminar for school administrators on January 7th. We encourage school districts to connect their closed circuit cameras to the Nassau County Police Department’s intelligence center as an additional security measure.”
The Active Shooter seminar at Adelphi University educates public and private school officials on measures to take to prepare for a deadly attack and the proper protocols to follow during an assault by an individual with a gun, knife or other weapon.
The seminar, organized by the Nassau County Police Department, is open to all 56 county public school districts, private and parochial schools, colleges and universities, as well as large corporations and hospitals.
