Mangano urged to return contributions

Nassau Democratic chairman Jay Jacobs Wednesday called on County Executive Edward Mangano to return about $75,000 in campaign contributions from contractors hired to clean up after superstorm Sandy until investigations into contracting procedures are completed.
"Mangano should return those donations immediately until the outcome of these investigations is clear," Jacobs said Wednesday in a news release.
All contributions comply with state election law, said Brian Nevin, a Mangano spokesman, in an email. Mangano is a Republican seeking re-election this fall.
The county awarded $151.5 million in emergency contracts after Sandy hit in October for services including removing felled trees, providing emergency shelter and cleaning up sewage from the damaged Bay Park Sewage Treatment plant. One Huntington tree debris removal firm, Looks Great Services, is scheduled to get nearly $70 million.
As of late April, the county had paid about $60 million to the contractors -- about $35 million to Looks Great. The county hopes to get 90 percent reimbursement from the federal government. The state attorney general and the Nassau district attorney are investigating how Nassau awarded the contracts and how the contractors performed, including Looks Great.
Jacobs said 90 percent of the $75,000 in contributions was given after Oct. 29, including $15,000 in "in-kind" contributions from Looks Great president Kristian Agoglia.
"Looks Great received a county contract in 2011 before the contribution in question, because it came in at the most competitive bid and was one of the only Long Island companies with the expertise and heavy equipment necessary for the job," Looks Great spokesman Dave Arnold said.
